Abstract :
This paper deals with image data decomposition schemes applied in a wavelet coder according to the JPEG 2000 standard. The 2D subband decomposition and 1D reversible transformation are considered and optimized. Two wavelet codec realizations are applied: slightly modified SPIHT and verification model VM8.6 of JPEG 2000. Selected reversible transforms are evaluated and new effective ones are proposed. Additionally, new subband decomposition methods are tested in a context of standard schemes. Optimized wavelet data decomposition in a wavelet coder can increase an effectiveness of the basic mallat-5/3 transform algorithm even up to 1.5 dB of PSNR in lossy compression and up to 3% of bit rate in lossless compression
