  • Abstract
    The ATM port relay approach has been devised to overcome the limitation on port addresses on the ATM NNI interfaces through taking advantage of the flexibility in the ATM transmission convergence sublayer. Work in ETSI on a VB5 reference point between a switch and an access network which makes use of the port relay concept started in mid 1994. The associated management must support OAM flows across the VB5 reference point and requires an object model which is compatible with existing standards. This paper shows how the blocking functions of the V5 interface can be supported on the VB5 using alarm OAM cells to represent X.731 state information, and how the existing ATM modelling naturally leads to a model for port relay
