Abstract :
The ATM multiplexing and switching technique represents one of the key elements for the enhancement of the network transport capabilities and to meet the emerging requirements of broadband services both for the business and residential sectors of the telecommunication market. A sound development of the new broadband network infrastructures requires careful assessments of the main technological advancements and considerable planning effort pursuing in a cost-effective way the overall evolution of the network towards an ATM-based B-ISDN. The paper deals with the status, the trials and development perspectives of broadband services and networks in Italy. In particular the phased approach planned by Telecom Italia for the evolution of existing network towards the ATM based B-ISDN in outlined. The approach aims to take an early benefit of the ATM technique to meet the needs of both the business and the residential customers
