  • Abstract
Several resource allocation approaches have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we compare various bandwidth allocation schemes and specifically examine the effectiveness (operational region) of these schemes for different traffic types. We also introduce the concept of a traffic space to represent the attributes of the traffic (burstiness, burst size, etc.) and the ATM switch/multiplexer (speed, buffer size, etc.) on a single three dimensional space. This traffic space then helps us in identifying the operational region of a particular resource algorithm in a generic sense
