Abstract :
The theory of phase-contrast magnetic resonance (MR) flow imaging is discussed. A formula for the velocity-induced phase shift is given. When bipolar gradient-pulses are added to a conventional 2-D MR imaging procedure and differences between acquisitions are determined using opposite-polarity flow-encoding pulses, the stationary signal is effectively cancelled and a flow image is obtained. An example is given in which the arteries and veins of the head and neck of a healthy volunteer are shown
