Abstract
This paper presents a controlled discharge method and its characteristics of a liquid nitrogen cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) coil in a small-scale superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) device. The maximum discharge time duration for the load and effective energy utilization factor of the SMES device itself are theoretically studied using an iterative calculation method. The theoretical calculations and results have been verified by practical measurements on the developed SMES device.
