Abstract
The use of electric propulsion in marine applications provides significant advantages over traditional mechanical solutions. Such supply networks are however, amongst the most demanding in terms of power quality and harmonic mitigation due to the variation in term of frequency and short circuit power. The paper describes these power quality issues and the design methodology to achieve the most convenient system architecture for addressing them. Current marine applications will be used to highlight the advantages of active filtering techniques compared to passive filtering under marine operational conditions and test results will be presented.
