Abstract :
This paper shows the development of a passive power limiting technique for variable speed generation. An 80 kW wound-rotor induction generator (WRIG) was utilized to demonstrate this characteristic for wind-turbine generators by both modeling and tab demonstration. First, simulations were used to calculate the rotor impedance values that could set maximized speed-power characteristics for steady-state operation. Second, practical tests were performed and compared to the simulation results after the values were set to maximize speed-power characteristics of the 80 kW-WRIG Finally, another tandem connected WRIG was modeled to extend the wind speed range in addition to the 80 kW machine.
