Abstract
The vernier hybrid machine is a recently developed form of variable-reluctance, permanent-magnet machine that is simple to construct and offers a compact direct-drive solution for low-speed high-torque applications. However, in common with other members of the VRPM family, it has a very low power factor especially if it is designed to exploit the full potential for high specific torque. Loss mechanisms and the trade off between torque density and power factor are explored in the paper.
