  • Abstract
Recently every industry has become increasingly reliant on patent protection and the futures of entire industries and countries can be analyzed and predicted based on patent developments. Numerous countries are responding to the rapid development of radio frequency identification device (RFID) applications by actively pursuing and protecting RFID innovations. This study examines numerous patent indicators to predict and explain future technological developments in the RFID industry, thereby providing insights for economic planning at the national scale. Patent indicators, such as the number of patent applications and Patent Cooperation Treaties (PCTs), have been used to analyze technological development trends in the context of overall development in Europe, Asia, and the United States and identify valuable technological development directions. The distributions of RFID patents were then used along with the revealed patent advantage (RPA) index to conduct cluster analysis of the K-means, thus providing insight into relative regional technological advantages in RFID development. Finally, this paper discusses the future creative value and development direction of the Taiwanese market.
