            Abstract :
Distance learning provides an alternative pedagogical environment for disseminating university coursework to nontraditional students working in industry. As the instructor of a distance education course, the author has faced many challenges, disasters and triumphs. He finds distance instruction to be an extremely enriching teaching experience. He believes it has positively changed his teaching style. He also firmly believes that as technology advances, distance education courses will be adopted as a viable method of degree conferring. Instructors need to be prepared to teach distance education classes, and to face the demographic profiles that define the distance education student. This paper provides a glimpse inside one computer engineering course offered by Iowa State University, USA, as part of a new distance-based BSc. electrical engineering curriculum
