Abstract
An mobility adaptive handoff scheme, called MGVA (multi-beam GEO velocity adaptive) is proposed for the multi- beam GMSS (Geostationary Mobile Satellite System). Compared with the traditional schemes applied in the terrestrial cellular systems, the arrival traffic will be classified and assigned channel resource based on their type and the MS velocity. Simulation results show that the MGVA scheme significantly decreases the handoff failure rate and has favorable adaptability to the high velocity MS. Additionally, the MGVA scheme can flexibly achieve better tradeoff among various handoff performance criteria and maintain a fairly low complexity.
