Abstract :
An adaptive maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) receiver with dual diversity combining/selection is studied. The proposed receiver employs two independent channel impulse response estimators, with each estimator estimating one channel only. The likelihood metrics are calculated from the received signals by using independently estimated channel parameters. In diversity combining, metrics calculated from individual channels are combined, whereas in diversity selection, metrics are calculated from the channel having the highest signal power. Both techniques have been applied to the symbol-spaced MLSE algorithm and the T/2 fractionally-spaced MLSE algorithm. It is shown that the proposed combining technique yields superior performance, whereas the selection technique is suboptimum but renders a simpler receiver structure
