  • Abstract
    The primary objective of the Groupe Special Mobile (GSM) program was to establish a commercial service in 1991. The actual situation represents a delay of some 9-12 months. Nevertheless, there is no doubt about the progress in both the technological complexity of the GSM concept and the political impact of European wide cooperation. The purpose of the present paper is twofold. First it provides some insight into the communication mechanism occurring within the signaling layer of the pan European digital mobile network specified by the GSM standard body. The second aspect of the paper focuses on the usefulness of employing standardized description languages such as SDL (specification description language) for the protocol design as well as protocol implementation used in a mobile station
