Abstract :
In this paper, a new frequency estimation algorithm based on the dynamic phasor method is proposed to increase the estimation accuracy for a signal having a varying envelope. The proposed algorithm consists of two stages: phasor estimation and frequency estimation. First, the input signal is decomposed into two components using the dynamic phasor method. Then, the two components are combined to estimate the frequency. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, amplitude change and frequency change are considered for generating test signals. The performance of the algorithm is also assessed for dynamic conditions in a single machine power system. The Electromagnetic Transients Program was used to generate voltage signals for a load increase and single phase-to-ground faults. The performance evaluation showed that the proposed algorithm accurately estimated the fundamental frequency of power system signals in the presence of amplitude modulation and frequency change. When compared with other algorithms, simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has lower frequency estimation error. Improved algorithm is expected to increase the reliability of the measurement under fault conditions.
