Abstract
A technique is presented to extract the modal parameters from the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) results in the analysis of waveguide junction problems. Using this approach, it is possible to extract the modal amplitudes of the guided modes from the FDTD field distribution. These modes can be separated from the radiated and the evanescent modes, so that the scattering at these junctions can be studied more easily. The propagation constant extracted from the scattering in a dielectric slab junction shows good agreement with the exact value.<>
