Abstract :
In this paper we revisit the issue of modeling of the interconnected power system for the purpose of evaluating stability and control design. In order to address the problem of system dynamic security for large disturbances or oscillations, it may be necessary to deal with direct stability methods. This is a field that has been extensively explored with respect to “transient stability”, and a large body of literature exists with respect to various Lyapunov or “energy” functions, in particular the so-called transient energy functions. Typically, the transient energy function methods do not address inter-area modes, but from a design perspective, it may be possible to utilize a Lyapunov-based approach for control design in the presence of large disturbances. In this paper we consider an adaptation of a robust control result that was first developed by Peterson (1987) within the framework of quadratic Lyapunov functions for the purpose of design and evaluation of voltage control in the presence of large swings in generator rotor angles
