Abstract
We propose an alternating-direction implicit (ADI) scheme which is unconditionally stable, thereby permitting the size of the time step to be chosen based on accuracy considerations rather than stability limits. We show that standard explicit formulations can introduce significant errors in the field values near the source under certain circumstances. In this paper, we present proper source conditions for ADI-FDTD. Applications for which ADI-FDTD offers potentially large computational savings include high-speed VLSI interconnects and low-frequency bioelectromagnetics.
