Abstract
A dataset of hydraulic flow variables (water depth and velocity) in flood periods was collected on the Urumqi River, in the Chinese Tianshan Mountains on July 24th of 2004. Variational trend and characteristics of runoff change and its effect on streambed evolution in source area of Urumqi River were examined in the study. In analysis on the dataset and meteorological data in the same periods, the results show the correct hydraulic measuring methods and appropriate analysis techniques; the relationship between the relevant quantities (average velocity, flow depth and discharge per unit width); the process of runoff variation especially velocity; and the streambed dynamic balance process.
