Abstract :
Warfighters and other workers are increasingly dependent upon reliable continuous access to network services and data stored on networks. Wireless mobile networks in military environments connecting troops, aircraft, ships, submarines, and shore backbone WANs over military SATCOM radio data links are characterized by intermittent connectivity, long delay, low bandwidth, asymmetry, and high link error rates. A solution to these problems has been developed in the form of a transparent gateway, which is inserted between the end systems and the wireless links without reconfiguration of the end systems or the core routers. This gateway enables roaming between different wireless access technologies, optimized usage of each link, aggregation of multiple links, and partial continuance of network services and access to data stored on networks even when roaming in areas completely bereft of connectivity.
