Abstract :
This paper discusses the requirements, and the engineering analysis and possible trades that will be considered in achieving the design goals defined for the development of the MET. The MET is conceived as a system of systems, with the principal systems being the RF/antenna, IF interconnect, and the baseband. The principal design goals of the MET include the capability to operate on the WGS space segment at both X- and Ka-bands; provide IP over transponded satellite service; and provide reduced life cycle support costs over current enterprise terminals. The MET design should be optimized for operation on WGS while at the same time provide a level of support on defense satellite communications system (DSCS) that is roughly equivalent to that provided by current enterprise terminals. Antenna size and configuration is key to achieving this design goal. Some preliminary analysis has been done in this area to determine the optimal size and configuration of the MET antenna versus antenna costs.
