Abstract :
This paper describes the basic concepts of a knowledge-based system developed to support the insulation coordination process in the power systems design area. It is particularly intended to perform insulation coordination in substation and transmission line design. Given the input specifications (e.g., overvoltages, environmental and operational data), the knowledge-based system generates standard withstand voltage levels for the equipment as well as air clearances and characteristics of insulator strings for transmission lines. The object-oriented approach has been adopted for its ability to represent and process knowledge without resorting to an inference engine
