Abstract
This paper presents a model to simulate the behavior of a semiconductor optical amplifier. First, the mathematical model governing the dynamic behavior of the semiconductor is developed and then the equations are solved by the finite difference method. The results of the numerical simulation are used to determine the characteristics of the amplifier such as the stimulated and spontaneous emission photon rate as well as the gain due to the input power and bias current change and the gain frequency spectrum. Gain due to the simultaneous change of the input signal´s wavelength and the bias current can also be calculated.
