Abstract
The Internet has been one of the fastest developing technologies of the 1990s; at the end of the decade what does the Net and its underlying technologies have to offer the industrial user? The paper introduces some of the fundamental technologies of contemporary industrial automation, discusses how Internet technologies may benefit the industrial user and shows how existing software products can be used to create solutions
