Abstract :
This paper presents the translation of movement of hands and fingers into ASCII data for a keyboard that is assisted by virtual reality (VR) techniques. The technologies that result in a microcontroller based ASCII data generator are discussed. We explore a glove that employs optical sensors and measure the finger flexures at knuckles and abduction between fingers. The standard keyboard pattern, QWERT, is considered as the basis to access changes in light received at each flexure and abduction sensors. A relationship is established between the change in light intensity viz-a-viz the change in angle at each knuckle or abduction when a virtual key on a standard keyboard is pressed. An angle-matrix is maintained that holds the change in angle at the knuckles for the keys specified row and column. This matrix is processed by a microcontroller and is translated into ASCII data for each virtual key.
