Abstract :
In this paper, an extended Phillips-Heffron model of a single machine to infinite bus system with both thyristor control series capacitor (TCSC) and static var compensator (SVC) is established. On the basis of this model, some basic issues on damping power system oscillations are investigated by theoretical analysis. Then the concept of "additional damping capability" of SVC-TCSC combination is proposed and the cause of its existence is discussed. At the end time-domain digital simulation is carried on with South China grid. The results fit well with the theoretical analysis.
