Abstract
Two advanced thermal battery designs are reviewed. A 28 V thermal battery was encased in titanium hardware and developed for pulse loading over a 300 s lifetime. The use of titanium or its alloys, having reduced weight, greater strength, and favorable thermal properties, yielded extended thermal lifetimes resulting in substantial specific energy gains. A 50 g thermal battery incorporating a titanium alloy case for use in a high acceleration environment is also presented. Advanced concepts in the enclosure design were employed to reduce stress and titanium was used as the case material for low weight and high strength
