  • Abstract
Pressure tolerant lithium cells, discharged under pressures up to 10000 psia, utilize the solid cathode Li/fluorinated carbon (Li/CFx) system or the liquid oxyhalide Li/chlorinated sulfuryl chloride (Li/CSC) system. Studies focused on the discharge, orientation, and polarization characteristics of these cells. Discharge and polarization studies indicate that the increased pressure has only a slight effect on cell voltage. Additionally, cells of either chemistry appear insensitivity to orientation. When using a bellows assembly for internal pressure compensation, the energy delivered by either a Li/CFx or a Li/CSC pressure tolerant cell is essentially unaffected by increases in the external pressure
