Automated control of aircraft utility subsystems on the MD-11

Abstract :
One of the unique features of the MD-11 is the use of aircraft system controllers (ASCs) to operate the aircraft utility subsystems. Essentially, these controllers perform most of the same functions that were previously performed by the second officer on the DC-10 aircraft. This allows the MD-11 to be operated by a two-member crew versus the three-member crew required for the DC-10. The authors discuss the functions performed by each controller, the fundamental operating concepts affecting the ASC design, and the influence of aircraft system characteristics on the control algorithms Controller operation, crew interface considerations, advantages provided by aircraft system controllers, and the limitations of the ASC capability are also discussed. Some of the lessons learned during the development of these systems and their introduction into revenue service are also presented
