Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. Work has begun on the next generation of gyroklystrons in a cooperative effort between the University of Maryland-IPR and NRL. The primary design goals are to achieve 1 MW of output power at 35 GHz with a bandwidth of approximately 1% without using superconducting magnets. The design will incorporate a first harmonic, TE/sub 011/, 17.5 GHz input cavity followed by 2/sup nd/ harmonic, TE/sub 021/, 35 GHz buncher cavities to improve the gain. The output cavity will also operate at the 2/sup nd/ harmonic, TE/sub 021/, at 35 GHz. Codes used in the design include the MAGYKL suite, a modified version of MAGYII to allow simulation of both harmonics, and HFSS. The electron gun was designed using Egun with gun parameters fixed at a voltage, V/sub b/=70 kV, a beam current, I/sub b/=40 A, a perpendicular to axial velocity ratio, /spl alpha/=1.5, and an axial velocity spread, /spl Delta/v/sub z/<6%. Manufacturing is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1999 followed by cold tests and full power operation. The design process, considerations, and experimental results will be presented.
