Abstract
Recently reported time and frequency domain numerical approaches based on the finite element method have proved to be powerful tools for the analysis of arbitrary shaped planar optical junctions. Through the analysis of key abrupt planar junctions, the performance of both approaches are compared and their corresponding advantages and disadvantages are pointed out.
