Abstract :
Load frequency control (LFC) issue has been one of the major subjects in electric power system operation and design. Nowadays, it is becoming much more significant in accordance to increasing size, changing structure and complexity of interconnected power systems. In this paper, a new decentralized self-tuning pole placement control technique is proposed as an appropriate strategy for load frequency control, which can automatically adapt with wide variations in the operating conditions. This control strategy requires only local input-output data and can follow random changes in the operation conditions. We apply this technique to a control area which is linked to other control areas of an interconnected power system. This control area includes the model of Karoon3 and Dez hydro power plants in KHOZESTAN (in south of Iran). The proposed pole placement controller utilizes a linear approximation of generation units and load model, for which parameters are estimated online from past input and output values by RLS system identification algorithm. Simulations demonstrate the excellent performance of the proposed control scheme.
