Abstract
The focus of this paper is on the reliable operations and control of the electric power system. The electric power transmission grid is a large interconnected power grid controlled by a hierarchy of control devices and systems. Currently the overall control of the grid is today primarily through an energy management system (EMS), with some limited automatic control at substations by devices such as tap changing transformers and generation control devices. This paper presents initial results of the Fast Simulation and Modeling (FSM) project effort for transforming today´s electric grid into an intelligent system of the future that can support significant and strategic improvements in security, quality, reliability and availability. This could be achieved through a robust, sustainable, adaptive, self-healing infrastructure.
