Abstract :
The need to reform the vehicle management system (VMS) specification approach currently used in air vehicle design is addressed, and the changes that should be made to the current specifications to accommodate the modern approach to aircraft system design are discussed. The need for a new VMS specification was realized during the development of a requirements definition document for a fly-by-light VMS that could be applied to a new generation of fighter aircraft for multirole missions. It is recommended that a general specification for VMSs be developed following the format of AFGS-87242A General Specification for flight control systems
