Abstract
This paper describes the current state of the art in communications technologies, as it applies to computerized traffic control systems. It analyzes the problems and tradeoffs required to achieve an optimal communications system linking the central processor to individual intersections of a CBD grid system as well as distributed stations along a freeway system. This report is based on a combination of analytical and practical experience gained in designing, developing, and implementing traffic control communications systems in both North America and Europe during the past 3 years.
