Abstract :
In this paper, the requirements for next generation passive optical network (NG-PON) and evolution trends of PON are analyzed. Based on the analysis of the requirements for NGPON and the characteristics of various potential NG-PON schemes, it is believed that hybrid TDM/WDM PON will be the most promising candidate NG-PON schemes for different application scenes in the near future, and the OFDM PON and coherent PON are the most suitable solutions for the far future to satisfy the requirements of ultra-high capacity, higher split ratio, and wider coverage. The key techniques enabling NG-PON are also described in the last.
