Abstract :
An integer linear program model is presented for performing the most economical deployment of transceivers to enable network survivability. However, there is always room left for improvements in the traffic engineering protection scheme yielded. A complementary formulation then finds out how to also use protection resources elsewhere; substantially increasing the global network availability as a result. A study case shows that optimal traffic engineering can extend full link protection to 8 (out of 10) links over networks designed for 2 single failures.
