Abstract
The authors provide the rationale for and report on the progress of a new particle-based method for the mechanical modeling of complex materials such as soft biological tissues. The intent is to represent a material as a cloud of microscopic particles, whose overall mechanical characteristics arise from interactions between particles. This approach differs in several important aspects from conventional finite element schemes and seems especially well suited to supporting real-time simulation models for use in surgical training
