Abstract
The development of the MeerKAT radio telescope´s Digital Back End marks a departure from Radio Astronomy tradition in a number of ways. Design with a focus on key performance requirements, a well defined upgrade path and a firm goal of maximising science output leads to a novel architecture for an instrument of this scale. Flexibility, upgradability and availability for science are the results of this design process.
