  • Abstract
We report the design and characterization of a compact printed antenna that utilizes a TE/sub 0/ surface-wave as the primary source of free space radiation. This novel antenna structure offers the benefits of simple fabrication, compact size, high efficiency, and broad operational bandwidth. Measurement of return loss and radiation pattern characteristics of the antenna indicate a 44% operating bandwidth ranging from 1.78 to 2.78 GHz, which includes almost all of the worldwide digital PCS frequency bands as well as the ISM frequency band, for Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN systems. In addition, the radiation efficiency was measured to be 96% at 2 GHz using the Wheeler cap method.
