Abstract
This paper is aimed to assess the potential benefits and the achievable accuracy of a procedure for the numerical evaluation of the plane wave reflection coefficient of planar periodic surfaces, without requiring time consuming simulations of electrically large samples of the surface itself. The proposed approach comes out from a UTD (Uniform Geometrical Theory of Diffraction) picture of the field scattered from a finite periodic surface, and is thought for unconventional periodic surfaces where the Floquet theorem cannot be used to reduce the study to a full-wave numerical analysis of a single periodicity cell.
