Abstract :
Nowadays the level of penetration of nonprogrammable renewable (NPRE) power systems in some countries is quite high and it is going to increase in the next years. Of course such systems have an impact on national power systems, especially in those regions that are weakly connected with the main national grid, e.g. islands power systems. This paper addresses the general problem of finding some parameters apt to evaluate NPRE penetration level. In this way it would be possible to compare different situations in the same country as well similar situations in different countries. Regarding to this, a comparative analysis of Sicilian and Corsican power systems has been performed and numerical evaluation of the proposed parameters is provided. The major result shows that Sicilian NPRE can exceeds the whole demand without aggravating system safety, while in Corsica NPRE supply is limited to 30%. Technical and policy implications to improve NPRE penetration are discussed.
