  • Abstract
A novel analytical method for the study of layered anisotropic (including gyrotropic) waveguides used in integrated optics and in millimeter-wave applications is presented. It is a simple technique applicable to layers with longitudinal or polar anisotropic configurations, which is straightforward procedure when applied to structures with two or three lossless uniaxial layers. The present method is a systematic technique derived from the 4×4 matrix formulation, specially suited for analytical discussions and for the derivation of closed-form expressions for the modal equations of the guided hybrid (or TE and TM) modes. The guidance properties of a conductor-backed uniaxial slab with a coplanar optic axis are presented as an example of application
