Abstract
A simple-to-use approximation for the bit error probability is given. The accuracy should be acceptable in most engineering studies. In fact, although the standard approximation may be inaccurate, it is actually sufficient in many cases. Even in those cases, the approach presented can be used with greater confidence with insignificant additional complexity, or it can be used as a quick indicator of the sufficiency of the standard approximation. The approach naturally leads to the identification of key parameters for analysis. The approach is more generally applicable and its applicability and accuracy are being studied for other SSMA (spread spectrum multiple access) problems
