  • Abstract
Quality and Reliability are the keys to successful application of electronics to the extremely demanding environment of the automobile. If we cannot consistently and in volume, build them to be reliable; we simply will not be able to achieve the glowing promise of future electronic applications now visualized. Reliability is built in by continuously stnvmg to tailor the product design to the capability of the manufacturing process. The author then compares this from a manufacturing standpoint of mechanical vs. electronic products. He then concludes that simply because a product or feature is advertlsed as being "electronic" (or solid state), does not rean the customer will drop everything and dash out to buy it; Bur when it is labeled "electronic," the customer errccts it to be inherently more reliable than the non-electronic item it replaces.
