  • Abstract
It is the best of times in the x86 world, it is the worst of times, it is a time of new options as new parts are announced, it is a time of consolidation as old products are withdrawn and entire companies retreat from the market. Never before have PC system designers faced so many attractive alternatives, but never before has the selection process been more tough. This paper places some of the recent market activity in perspective, and speculates on market changes to come.<>
