Abstract
An Automated Highway System (AHS) offers significant potential benefits in the areas of petroleum useage, safety, and environmental concerns. The extent of these benefits and the possibility of the AHS becoming an operational reality in the future is significantly affected by the system design approach eventually selected. These issues and a possible design concept are explored in this paper.
