Abstract :
The author discusses the International Advanced Robotics Programme (IARP), which identified an opportunity to develop advanced robotics for medical and healthcare applications. As a result of this initiative, a feasibility study was commissioned by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to identify specific targets for robotics within the healthcare field. Three prime candidates were selected: a surgery assistant, a patient handler, and a fetch and carry robot for the disabled. Each of these is now the subject of a detailed project definition study by a consortium of industrial, academic and medical institutions. These studies should result in a user-driven specification for the three advanced robots and lead to the construction of demonstrator systems in 1991-2
