Abstract :
A time-compressed aural communication system using 60-GHz microwaves has been developed. In this system, 10-second aural information is time-compressed into 0.1 -second and transmitted to the moving vehicle. The information is received and temporarily stored in the vehicle´s unit. It is then reproduced to the driver in its original form. This system utilizes the directivity of microwave antennas in the vehicle and lane units to distinctly define local communication areas on the road. In addition, by virture of the rapid operation of the microwave circuits, it enables information of high density to be transmitted and received at high speed. The authors confirmed that the system could be applied to many kinds of vehicular communications including route guidance, road information service, and traffic control, and that it provides numerous advantages when compared to other vehicular communication systems.
