Abstract :
During the operation, overhead power lines are subject to many atmospheric factors such as lightning flashes, wind and falling trees, which all influence the power line´s performance. The paper deals with the evaluation of lightning threat to distribution network feeders based on the advanced use of high-resolution flash density data (HRFDD). High-resolution flash density data with 100 × 100 m spatial resolution are calculated from lightning information collected by a lightning location system. By implementing advanced topological and spatial analysis of the distribution network, it is possible to evaluate lightning threat probability per feeder. The paper describes an overview of modern methods for optimizing the lightning performance of utilities network using high resolution flash density data.
